Browsable Indexes

Browsing allows you to approach the data by clicking through various indexes. These indexes have been designed to allow the majority of queries to be answered quickly and efficiently in this way. The indexes to Sawyer number, King, Kingdom, and Charter date allow a quick approach to charters listed by these data. The Archives index gives lists of both charters and manuscripts associated with each archive. The Manuscripts index allows browsing by manuscript classmark. All of these lists contain a number of clickable live links to take you quickly to related data.

NB: not all charters or manuscripts appear in all indexes; they only appear in the indexes to which they are relevant. Some charters have no date and are not roughly datable, and so do not appear in the list by ‘charter date’ (which is necessarily very approximate in many cases anyway, especially in the case of inconsistent forgeries). Some manuscripts, for example antiquarian transcripts, are not associated with any archive. All manuscripts appear in the classmark list, and all charters appear in the Sawyer number list.
